Helping your bees through the summer heat

Native bees are well adapted to the Australian environment. However, severe heat can damage or kill a colony. In temperatures above 40 degrees it becomes critical that we intervene to ensure the bees safety.

Some basic tips for the survival of colonies

  1. Do not take them outside the geographical range that they can be found within in nature.

  2. When positioning a hive, provide shade in the hot months from mid morning onwards. If the temperatures are going to be very hot, close the hive and bring the hive inside the night before. Alternatively, you can wet a towel and drape it over the hive for an evaporative cooling effect.
